At the moment the "Birthday and Anniversary report" calculates based on the last day of the month when the report is run. For an example: Bob joined the Club on Nov 30th, 2016. If we ran the report today it would say he is 0 years and 7 months.

We could change the report to use the last day of the year instead and remove the months. For an example: Bob joined the Club on Nov 30th, 2016. If we ran the report today it would say he is 1 year. The months would be removed for all members.

This would mean if a member just joined last week, the report would say 1 year.

Do you think it should stay how it is? Or should the report get changed?

I'd prefer it to stay including the months, since that's the actual time the person has been a member. Saying Bob has been a member for a year is inaccurate.

I agree with staying with the last day of the month. The extreme case of rounding up from a week to a year is more confusing.

Its very interesting, we've been receiving a lot of feedback both ways. We're hoping to find some sort of consensus here in the community :)

I say leave it as it. Showing one year when a member has only been a member for a few weeks or months is more confusing.

And besides, I personally like to see that a person has 21 years 3 months.

Thank you all for your feedback. This makes me feel better about the change that I did with the report. If you have any more comments about the report please let me know. :)

Well, it seems that I am in the minority on this one and I strongly disagree that the report should remain as it is. If I'm not mistaken, I was the one who originally asked for the change. To me, it comes down to this. Why am I running an anniversary report? I do it because I want to know how many years they have been in the club (on their anniversary date). If I wanted to know how many years and months they had been in the club on today's date, I would call it a longevity report or something along those lines.

If I was referring to my upcoming wedding anniversary, I would say, "Our 23rd anniversary is next month". I would not say that we have been married 22 years and 11 months today.

I'm very surprised by the other responses. Other clubs must use this report for a purpose other than my club.

    CHANGE IT!

We have been discussing this issue internally and have not found a solution yet. More feed back from the community is very welcome.
At the moment one of the ideas is to have a new option on the page which is called Display View. This would give two options. 1. Years and Months. 2. Years (Rounded up). This is how the reports would look:

    Years and Months
    Bob - 0 years 11 months - Nov 27th, 2016
    Eve - 1 year 1 month - Sept 27th, 2016

    Years (Rounded up)
    Bob - 1 year - Nov 27th, 2016
    Eve - 2 years - Sept 27th, 2016

Bob is not 1 year yet, but the report rounded it up to 1 year. Eve is only 1 year and 1 month, but it shows two years. Is this OK?

Another idea is to allow a custom start date for the report. At the moment the report runs on today's date. If we change this to allow a custom date, would this be better? So you can choose Jan 1st, 2018 instead of using today's date. It would still display the data as year then month.

Rounding up (Option 2) is clearly the answer that I am looking for. In the 2 cited examples, I think few would disagree with the case of Bob. If I run the report in October, and his birthday is in November, rounding up to one year seems right.
In the case of Eve, it is less obvious, but then why would someone run a report in October for birthdays 11 months ahead of September birthdays. Nonetheless, I still believe that rounding up is correct because she will be 2 years on Sept 27th, 2017 (her next birthday).
Another way to accomplish the same objective is to run the report using the date on the last day of the reporting period (rather than today's date). In this case the years come out correct and forget the months (essentially truncate).
The way that our club uses this report is to look one or two months ahead to see what birthdays are coming up in the near future and to know how old they will be on that birthday. It is of no real use to know how many years and months old they are today. That is answering a different question that we aren't asking.

I can see what you mean. How the current report works, works great for an entire year. But when you select the single month, you are looking for how long the member has been in the Club or how old the member is during that month. At the moment it uses today's date as the report date, if we changed it to use the last day of the month selected, the report would show the date you are looking for. Please see these examples:
Date Joined Club in December: (Current way, using today's date.)
    Bob - 0 years 10 months - Dec 10th, 2016
    Eve - 6 years 10 month - Dec 30th, 2010

Date Joined Club in December: (New way using the end of the month as the report date when month is selected.)
    Bob - 1 year - Dec 10th, 2016
    Eve - 7 years - Dec 30th, 2010

I have created a suggestion about this and sent it to our Product team. I will be looking for more feedback about this from our users. If you like this idea or think we should leave it how it is, please let me know. If you can also provide the reason that would be great.

Any progress on this? I think that you are finally on the right track, but it seems to have stalled.

    See you in Toronto!

Thank you for bringing this up again. I collected more options about this change and at the moment this change is sitting with our Developers. As soon as they make the change in ClubRunner I will post it in this thread so you and other members will be notified. Thank you for all of the feedback about this.

    See you in Toronto!

I'm trying to be the squeaky wheel. In case you think I have forgotten about this, I haven't. This report still annoys me in its current form. Are the developers really going to change this? It's been "sitting" with them for 6 months.

I looked into the request to change the how the birthday report does the calculations and it has been reviewed. The request does not have a release date set yet. I have sent a message onto our Development team about this to see if they are able to assign a date to it. I will let you know once I hear back.
Our Developers have been working on enhancements to ClubRunner lately, like the new website designer, volunteer hour tracking, and more.

I heard back from our Product team about this. At the moment it is still pending a date. There are a number of other things that have priority which need to be resolved. If/when we receive more feedback from other clubs about this issue, it will gain priority. In the future, when I hear more about this, I will let you know.

Thank you for following up and for your feedback.

I Agree with expressing it in years. Only I would round down. Full years of service is useful. You can always go to the profile if you want to know the exact date. Maybe understanding how people are using the report?
