On our clubrunner site, I would like to be able to have a widget displaying the next 4 upcoming speakers in a sidebar, but also have a page that displays all of our past speakers.

On the face of it it seems easy - just put the widget with two different sets of settings on the home page and on a custom page. The problem is, there is only one speakers widget. Change the settings on one and you change the other.

What would be nice is, when you place a widget, you (possibly optionally) instantiate or clone the widget to that location and then the settings on that clone/instantiation be local to that page.

I also face this problem with the stories widgets. We have multiple classes of stories - some of them are club news, some are news from Rotary around the world, some are publicity for coming events, some are descriptions and reports on past projects that I want to have in a sub-page somewhere but not on the home page. I would like to be able to display the story groups under different headings in different sections of the bulletin/home page/site. All the instantiations would share the same logic and draw from the same story library, but would display different stories in a different way.

    Hi Mark,

    Thank you for the feedback.

So we've been discussing speakers on and off for a bit, and I know that allowing past speakers to be shown on the speaker page is something that is on our wishlist for future updates. Allowing more widgets to be like the custom style widgets is also something that is on our radar for future updates for things like stories, and events, etc.

For Stories, there is a bit of a workaround, via tags and stories, but it wouldn't quite give you the presentation you're looking for. I added tags to three of your home page stories, and if you go to your Club's stories page, and click on the tags, it will filter to only those stories. This URL will work to link people to, which will present them only with the stories based on that tag. I won't post the link here directly without your permission, but if you run into any issues using it on the stories page, please let me know!

Thanks Zach. This issue is still bugging us. Our Rotary club has had many great speakers in the past and we would like to be able to display past speakers on a page so that people can look back on history and smile. However, since the front page widget only shows upcoming speakers, there is no way to display past speakers anywhere else on the site.

Even worse, if you go to the trouble of getting a good bio and photo of a speaker and enter it in the speaker information section, it would be great to be able to link to that bio when you do the story writeup about the event at which they spoke. But you can't. If you try to do a link to a speaker from within a story, you only get a list of upcoming speakers. I had to pull the speaker URLs out of analytics!
