Many communications, previously via email, are now moving to WhatsApp, Viber and other mobile device applications.

For practical reasons we often send out reminder/announcement event and meeting notices by WhatsApp and then separately send out emails from Club Runner. Members who are lazy, reply via the WApp chat to say they are attending but then do not register (of course a number do register via the events tab in the CRunner App and others by clicking the links in their emails.)

I would like to see if there is support in the CRunner community for sending communications via say WhatsApp (probably a broadcast message rather than a chat) (Note: we all use WApp in Singapore, I realise other countries have their own favourites) - directly from from CRunner. The link in such a message would lead the member to the registration page.

If there is support - over to the development team!

(if a practical alternative to the feature already exists, please let me know as I have not, so far, discovered it.)

    Hi Keith,

Thanks for the suggestion! I was looking around seeing what is available, at this time it seems WhatsApp has no available API that we would be able to tie that sort of integration into. Until they offer an official API that we would be able to tie into I doubt we would feel comfortable trying to make any integrations with that platform. I have passed your feedback over to our product team for their review.

If ClubRunner does move forward with any broadcast notification options, we'll make sure to let you (and everyone else) know!

Hi Zach, has there been any more progress with respect to the ability to do broadcast notifications (other than thru the CR app) eg. is there an official API available as yet for WhatsApp??

    Hi Dianne,

At least as of today, there is still no API to allow organizations like ClubRunner or individual Rotary clubs to do non-business centric messages. Most of the WhatsApp API that is available is orientated around businesses who want to pay for services to manage an account and interface with customers. You can view the documentation here: WhatsApp Business Platform

    To quote their own documentation

The WhatsApp Business Platform allows medium and large businesses to communicate with their customers at scale. Using our APIs, businesses can connect thousands of agents and bots to interact with customers programmatically and manually. Additionally, the APIs can be integrated with numerous backend systems, such as CRM and marketing platforms.

For example, if you were running an online store you could pay WhatsApp to help you deliver messages / customer support issues / etc. You could provide quick notifications for shipping updates/etc. But these are all things to support a business and not really a Rotary club or most of our services integrations.

    I hope that makes sense.

Thanks Zach! It does make sense, seeing that, I was just hoping that 7 years later something might have changed.
