Today I attempted to place a brief description into my club's new ClubRunner website, Profile/Biography.

When I pressed save I got a message saying that the space is limited to 2000 characters. It claimed that my posting was over 5000 characters.

When I checked the number of characters using Microsoft Word, the count was 562 characters.with spaces.

What could be causing these very strange numbers?

Hi, if you have pasted the text as a copy from Word, you will also have pasted a large number of code, swelling the text. If you do a copy of a Word text, paste the text to a note pad that handles raw text, then you can copy it again and paste into CR.
    Best regards from Sweden,
    Mats

    Hi John

The character counter is counting all of the characters inclusive of html, which while invisible by default, does take up space. While Word uses html to make the document look as it is expected under the hood, it does not count any of its markup as part of the counting. This is the difference between ClubRunner and Word for this specific case.

After you paste your content into the editor, if you click the source button on your editor, you should see all of the additional markup that was carried over.

I know the problem with Word. I did what Mats suggested and it worked. (Thanks Mats) Now I have another question, however. When I do Stories I compose them in Word. Then I copy and paste them into the story editor boxes. Now I know the number of characters are larger for Stories vs. the Biography limits. but they are not that large. Why do I not reach the limits in Stories?

    Hi John,

Depending on how much formatting is done (or not) to the content in Word, will normally depend on how much additional content is brought over when pasted. If you simply wrote up a story in Word, but did not apply much if any formatting to it like: Font Size, Font Type, Font Color, etc, there is less markup that comes over with it. We also have different instances of our editor, some of which clean up the pasted output from Word in different ways.

Stories, along with most of the other website content, has additional rules to help cleanup the word paste output. I suspect that we are not applying all of the same filtering options to the biographies version, and will investigate with our team and see if we can improve it in this case.

    I hope that makes sense!

I suspected that was the case. I figured that the Stories program filtered out the extra html that Word uses. WordPress blog wear did the same filtering.
